Interview, Article and Link Roundup

November 27th, 2007. It's the official release date of Bender's Big Score!

Time to link to a number of interviews and articles with and about people involved in Futurama that appeared over the past days:
Now, the waiting for the next movie begins...

PS: For the WIRED readers wondering about that one number in the article, here's a hint: Who won the popular vote in the 2000 US election?

PPS: The comments are back on now. If you didn't see the movie yet, maybe stay away from them until you got a chance to see it. There are things in the movie that can be spoiled for you with 2 or 3 words.

Bender's Big Score Review

After receiving a review copy two days ago, I've been busy watching Bender's Big Score. The resulting review of Bender's Big Score should help undecided readers without giving away much of the plot.

Executive Summary: I liked it!

I'll put up a reader review page a few days after the official release. The comments will stay closed for a few more days to give people a chance to buy and watch the movie without someone spoiling it for them.

Interview with Rough Draft Studios

Scott Weinberg of "Cinematical" just put up a nice interview with producers and directors Claudia Katz, Dwayne Carey-Hill and Peter Avanzino of Rough Draft Studios, who are responsible for turning the Futurama scripts into animation.
Cinematical: "Explain why the sickeningly clever Roswell That Ends Well holds a special place in the collective heart of the Rough Draft crew. (And congrats. It really is a superlative episode on all counts.)"

Claudia Katz: "Roswell is one my top three episodes of all time. Made great of course by our very own Rich Moore, as well as our fantastic crew. It was also the studio's first Emmy Award. After several nominations and no wins, I was sure we would never get that Emmy. That year I persuaded the writers (mostly because they probably agreed anyway) to submit Roswell for Emmy consideration. I remember driving to the Emmys thinking, well at least this year we'll lose on our own terms. When they called out Futurama, I was literally sitting in my chair thinking, well, they didn't say "The" as in The Simpsons. Both Rich Moore and I were so shocked we had to be prodded out of [our] chairs."
Read the whole interview to learn more about how the Futurama animation is created and about the people behind it.

Futurama Movie Premiere, Win Tickets!

Bender's Big Score will officially premiere at the famed Cineramadome theater in Los Angeles this Thursday on November 15th, 7:30 PM. The event is primarily for the crew and cast of Futurama (Groening, Cohen, the voice artists, the animators, etc.), their friends and the press. The general public will have to wait a few days still for the DVD release.

Now, the good part! If you live in or close to L.A. and act fast we just might be able to sneak you in! Courtesy of FOX HE we will distribute five pairs of tickets (10 total) to Futurama fans who can be present in L.A. for the red carpet reception (6:30PM), the showing of Bender's Big Score (7:30pm) and the after party.

The rules for this mini-contest:
  • You must be able to be in L.A. at the above mentioned place on November 15th, 6:30pm.
  • You should be a "loud, screaming" Futurama fan and must be of age 21 or older.
  • You must know one other fan of age 21 or older whom you will take along.
  • You must write an email to [contest over, email removed] stating
    1. Your name.
    2. Your age. There will definitely be an ID check at the cinema.
    3. The sentence "I'd be able to attend in LA and bring another fan of age 21+"
    4. A short reason (1 to 4 sentences) why you should be picked to go (e.g., how much of a fan you are).

If you and/or the friend you'd be coming with are younger than 21, check back later on Wednesday Nov. 14th. There might still be a change regarding the age rule.

I'll pick from those who enter within a day and contact them as soon as possible. Due to the short time frame, chances of winning are pretty good if you meet the above criteria.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE FEATURE-LENGTH ACTION EPIC 1000 YEARS IN THE MAKING ARRIVES...

FUTURAMA IS BACK, BABY!

In Fox Home Entertainment's First Carbon-Neutral Release, Fry, Leela, Professor Farnsworth And Bender Triumphantly Return On DVD November 27

Century City, CA - The future is back...and it's cleaner than ever! Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment presents the first of four direct-to-DVD Futurama adventures when Futurama: Bender's Big Score makes its highly anticipated DVD debut on November 27. As the studio's first carbon-neutral release, the carbon impact of the production, manufacture and distribution of the Futurama Bender's Big Score DVD was directly assessed and actively reduced. For the unavoidable emissions, the studio used high-quality, verified carbon offsets. Futurama: Bender's Big Score also features an eco-friendly highlight: a cameo from former Vice President Al Gore, guest starring as himself.

The first feature-length Futurama action epic, with three more adventures expected through 2009, finds the Futurama crew fighting to save Earth in an epic battle against nudist alien Internet scammers. It's nearly Christmas 3007 when evil naked aliens launch a cyber-attack on the Planet Express and make a shocking discovery: the secret of time travel, mysteriously tattooed on Fry's buttocks. Using their devious nudist software to control Bender, the aliens send him through history where he has run-ins with the likes of Al Gore, Coolio (Daredevil, Batman & Robin) and Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program, School For Scoundrels).

In addition to the never-before-seen movie, the Futurama: Bender's Big Score DVD features commentary from Matt Groening, David X. Cohen and cast members Billy West, John DiMaggio, Phil LaMarr, Dwayne Carey-Hill and Ken Keeler; an animated promo for An Inconvenient Truth starring Bender and Al Gore, with commentary by the former Vice President, Matt Groening and David X. Cohen; an all-new episode entitled "Everybody Loves Hypnotoad" including TV commercials of the future; a Futurama mind-shattering math lecture; character and design sketches and deleted scenes. Futurama: Bender's Big Score will be available for a suggested retail price of $29.98 U.S./$37.98 Canada.

Bender's Big Score Interview with DXC

In the run-up to the release of the first out of four feature length Futurama movies, Bender's Big Score, we were lucky to snatch an interview with David X. Cohen (DXC) who served as executive producer of Futurama throughout the 72 episode run of the show and is now overseeing the production of the four new movies.
Read what he has to say about Futurama's past, its hiatus period, its resurrection and the possibility of a future for Futurama.
CGEF: What enabled the four new Direct-to-DVD Futurama movies to go ahead in the end?

DXC: It was 100% a case of the fans saving our necks. DVD sales were excellent, and viewership of the reruns on Adult Swim surpassed all expectations, remaining shockingly high year after year.
Thanks go to FOX for providing illustrative images.
